Background

Dr. Neil Stone is a Professor of Clinical Medicine (Cardiology) at the Feinberg School of Medicine of Northwestern University. He is a practicing Internist-Cardiologist-Lipidologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH) where he is the Suzanne and Milton Davidson Distinguished Physician. He also serves as the Medical Director of the Vascular Center for the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute.

He is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases and a diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Lipidology.

Dr. Stone was a member of the first and third National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panels. (ATP I, III) He is a past Chairman of the American Heart Association (AHA) Nutrition Committee and Clinical Affairs Committee. As part of the AHA Expert Panel on Population and Prevention Science, he participated in the writing groups that published the AHA Guidelines for Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke: 2002 Update. Most recently he was selected by the AHA Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Metabolism to be a writing group member for the revision of the 2004 Evidence-Based Guidelines for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Women as well as the AHA/ADA Statement on Primary Prevention of CVD in Diabetes.

He is currently an At-Large Member of the new Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism and Vice-Chair of it’s Committee on Clinical Lipidology, Lipoprotein Metabolism and Thrombosis. He is Associate Editor, AHA Learning Library as editor for Metabolic Syndrome and Lipid Community Web sites.

He is on the Board of the National Lipid Association, currently serves as its treasurer and is the immediate President of the Midwest Lipid Association. He also serves as an Associate Editor for the new Journal of Clinical Lipidology.

Dr. Stone has co-authored three books on cardiovascular nutrition and/or management of lipid disorders and has authored over 130 publications in this field. The sixth edition of his most recent book, Management of Lipids in Clinical Practice, with colleague Conrad Blum M.D. was published in 2006.

Dr. Stone received his medical degree (summa cum laude) from the Feinberg School of Medicine of Northwestern University and completed a fellowship in cardiovascular diseases at that institution. In between he was an intern and resident in Boston at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and then spent three years at the National Institutes of Health under Drs. Fredrickson and Levy.

He was awarded the 2001 Outstanding Volunteer Clinical Teacher Award of the American College of Physicians. In 2002, he was awarded by the senior class of the Feinberg School of Medicine of Northwestern University, the New Jersey Healthcare Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award.

He is a master of the American College of Physicians and fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American College of Chest Physicians, and the Councils of Arteriosclerosis and Clinical Cardiology of the American Heart Association.
